2019-2020 GCER Distinguished Visitor Series

The eighth year of the GCER Distinguished Visitor Series features a number of prominent economists who will spend time in the Department during the 2019-2020 academic year. This year’s Distinguished Visitors include: 

Luigi Pistaferri is a Professor of Economics and the Ralph Landau Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic and Policy Research at Stanford University. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at University College London in 1999. Professor Pistaferri has produced a large and highly regarded body of research in the areas of macroeconomics, labor, and public economics. His work focuses on consumption, saving, portfolio choice, and the labor supply of households. His publications have appeared in top outlets including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Political Economy. Professor Pistaferri is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economics and Policy Research, and IZA. He recently completed a term as co-editor of the American Economic Review.

Professor Pistaferri will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of September 9-13, 2019. 

Harry Paarsch is a Professor of Business Analytics in the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1987. Professor Paarsch has a long and successful research record in applied econometrics, much of it focused on forestry economics and auctions. He is known for his structural econometric analysis of auctions and, more generally, for computational methods at the heart of modern quantitative research. His publications appear in the Journal of Labor Economics, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, the International Journal of Industrial Organization, and many other outlets.

Professor Paarsch will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of September 16-20, 2019.

Eric French is a Professor of Economics at University College London, Co-Director of the Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy (CPP), and a Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1999. Professor French is widely recognized for his expertise on the incentive effects of policy changes in health insurance, pension plans, and the minimum wage. He has produced numerous and widely lauded research papers in the areas of labor, public finance, health, and applied econometrics. His publications appear in top outlets including Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies,  the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Political Economy. 

Professor French will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of November 11-14, 2019.

Marco Battaglini is the Edward Meyer Professor of Economics at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2000 and has held faculty positions at Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study. Professor Battaglini well known for his work in the intersection of game theory and political economy. One the most prominent scholars in this area, his innovative work on the political dynamics of debt and fiscal policy influenced the way economists and political scientists think about intertemporal trade-offs in the political sphere. His published work appears in top outlets in both economics and political science. These include, among others, the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Political Science Review, and the Quarterly Journal of Political Science. Professor Battaglini is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and, in 2009, a recipient of the Carlo Alberto Medal awarded to an Italian economist under the age of 40. 

Professor Battaglini will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of January 13-17, 2020.

Kenneth Wolpin is the Distinguished Research Professor and Lay Family Professor of Economics at Rice University. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of the City University of New York in 1974 and has become one of the preeminent applied econometricians in the fields of labor economics, economic demography, development economics, and health economics. Professor Wolpin is known for his innovative tools for estimating discrete choice dynamic programming models. His approaches combine economic theory, data, and econometrics and have been widely adopted in economics research. He has served as the Principal Investigator of the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience, and as editor or associate editor for the American Economic Review, Econometrica, and the International Economic Review. Professor Wolpin is a regular recipient of NSF and NIH grants.

Professor Wolpin will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of February 20-24, 2020.

Edward Vytlacil is a Professor of Economics at Yale University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2000 and has held faculty positions at Stanford, Columbia, and NYU. He is known for his work on micro-econometric methodologies for treatment effects and policy evaluation. Professor Vytlacil has widely published in the highest-ranked field and general interest journals and has twice won the Journal of Econometrics Aigner Award. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and an NBER Faculty Research Fellow, Public Economics. 

Professor Vytlacil will visit the Center and the Department of Economics at Georgetown during the week of March 16-20, 2020.
